OPERA OVERVIEW

Music by Christoph Willibald Gluck
Libretto by Ranieri de’ Calzabigi
Based on the myth of Orpheus

World premiere: Burgtheater, Vienna, Austria, October 5, 1762

*Company premiere
A love that transcends. The mythical musician Orfeo descends into the underworld to reclaim his lost love, bound by one impossible condition: he must not look back. As doubt and longing take hold, each step forward risks losing her forever. In an intimate concert presentation, Gluck’s Orfeo & Euridice is stripped to its emotional core, where music carries the full weight of love, loss, and the fragile hope of holding on.

MORE DETAILS

  • What is a concert performance? At North Carolina Opera, a concert performance is all about the music! In this performance of Gluck’s ORFEO & EURIDICE, there are not traditional sets, costumes, or staging. Instead, the soloists, chorus, orchestra, AND conductor are all on stage to perform the music as a concert. In the audience, you’ll get an impressive view of the artists as they work together to bring the mythical love story to life.
  • What is a trouser role? A trouser role is a male character performed by a female singer. It may seem surprising today, but it’s a long-standing opera tradition. In ORFEO & EURIDICE, the hero Orfeo is sung by a mezzo-soprano, giving the role its rich, expressive sound.
